DATA-fest! Video from The Early Math Symposium and More!
Every other Wednesday, we post selections from our vast and wonderful archive of Early Math & Early Childhood Ed activities.
Please tell your friends, colleagues, librarians & parents about our FREE newsletter. Have fun, everybody!
A NOTE FROM STUART
Hello!
This is a very, very special edition of the Activities Newsletter. Thanks to the incredible team at The Early Math Project, we are able to share the video of the presentation I gave with Jon Dueck, Early Math Coordinator for the Office of the Fresno County Superintendent of Schools, for the Early Math Symposium in June.
If you were unable to tune in online, we’ve got you covered!
Our session was about the collection and presentation of data. Examples from my latest book, Show and Tell: Great Graphs and Smart Charts, were used to show several different kinds of graphs.
When children collect data from their own lives, the graphs and charts they create are visualizations of their own stories. It’s exciting!
In keeping with the data theme, our three featured MathStart books are:
Beep Beep, Vroom Vroom! (pattern recognition)
The Best Vacation Ever! (tallying)
Lemonade for Sale (bar graphs)
This week’s I See I Learn story is about the important skill of listening. To gather good data, you need to pay attention!
Percy Listens Up (listening)
I am working on little data project of my own, gathering information about teacher interest for Spanish editions of my books. Could you help me? Do you use Spanish books in your classroom? If yes, do you prefer bilingual translations? Your insights would be so helpful. Please send me an email here.
¡Muchas Gracias!
Now, let’s have some fun with data!

OUR PRESENTATION ON GREAT GRAPHS & SMART CHARTS!
Being able to gather, organize, visualize and interpret data are very important skills in the 21st century. Data are all around us! (By the way, did you know the singular of “data” is “datum”?)
Young children are accomplished visual learners. Long before they can read, or even speak many words, they are able to assimilate visual information with ease. Once they understand how data can be turned into bar graphs, pie charts, line graphs and pictographs, they are off to races, gathering data on everything from pets and snacks to favorite colors and the weather.
Jon, who works with teachers and students Pre-K through Grade 5, shares several ideas for classroom activities.
We invite you to create your own classroom data collection projects! Send us the results, with a chart or graph incorporated into an infographic. The first 50 respondents will receive a free copy of Show and Tell! Great Graphs and Smart Charts.*
The deadline is October 20, 2023. We look forward to featuring some of your submissions in our newsletter!
Here is the Official Submission Link.
If you have any questions, please send Jon an email: jdueck@fcoe.org

* Unfortunately, due to shipping issues, the free book offer is limited to those with a United States address. However, we look forward to seeing submissions from all over the world and featuring some of our favorites.
MATHSTART
Mathstart is a series of 63 storybooks organized into three levels for Pre-K through Grade 4. Each story teaches a different mathematical skill.
Here is list of where to find MathStart books!
• Level 1, Pre-K/ Kindergarten
Beep Beep, Vroom Vroom! (pattern recognition)
When little Molly plays with her big brother's red, yellow and blue toy cars, you know there is bound to be trouble...unless, of course, she can put them back in just the right order before he returns!
Recognizing and being able to extend patterns leads to the development of logical thinking.
• Level 2, Kindergarten / Grade 1:
The Best Vacation Ever (collecting data)
The family needs a break. Everybody's always so busy. But where should they go? A very smart and practical little girl asks some key questions and charts the answers. Mom wants to go some place quiet and cool. Grandma and brother Charlie are looking for fun. And everybody but Dad wants Fluffer the cat to come along. Is there any place that'll make everyone happy?
Learning to organize and interpret data develops the ability for critical thought.
• Level 3, Grades 2 - 4:
Lemonade for Sale (bar graphs)
When members of the Elm Street Kids' Club decide to sell lemonade to raise money to fix up their clubhouse, they do it in style.
Dressed in special “lemon hats,” with Petey the Parrot, the club mascot squawking, “Lemonade for Sale!,” business booms at first. Sheri keeps track on a bar graph, plotting the number of cups sold against the days of the week. But sales drop quickly when Jed the Juggler comes to town.
What will the Elm Street kids do?
Gathering, charting and comparing data is an important skill for assessing progress and making predictions.
I SEE I LEARN
I See I Learn is a series of 16 stories that follow the adventures of the children in Miss Cathy’s class at Ready, Set Pre-K in See-and-Learn City. Each story focuses on a different social, emotional, health & safety and cognitive skill important for success in school and in life. For Pre-K / Kindergarten.

Percy Listens Up! (listening)
Percy loves to play. Sometimes this means that he forgets to listen to his teachers or his mommy. He misses out on fun in school and at the pool. But see what always makes Percy listen!
Listening shows respect for what other people have to say. Careful listening helps children understand directions, learn new things, be safe, and have more fun.
Listen up, everyone!
