Hello, Everybody!
This week’s featured I See I Learn story is Camille’s Team / Camilla y su equipo, which one of my favorites — and not only because the “star” is named after my youngest granddaughter and it takes place at the beach. It love this story because it is about the important skill of cooperation / cooperación. We can accomplish so much when we work together!
I See I Learn books are divided into four domains: Social, Emotional, Health & Safety, and Cognitive skills. Although each story focuses on a particular domain, each book also includes lessons from all the other domains.
For example, Camille’s story is about developing friendships, cooperating with others, helping and sharing, and resolving conflicts, which are all social skills. But it also about learning to display a positive attitude (an emotional skill), participate in physical activities (a health & safety skill) and solve problems (a cognitive skill).
Go, Camille’s Team! (Scroll down to watch for the video!)
This week’s featured MathStart books are:
A Pair of Socks (matching)
Probably Pistachio (probability) *Did you know pistachio is my favorite flavor! What’s yours?
The Grizzly Gazette (percentages)
The Grizzly Gazette is about an election to choose the new mascot for Camp Grizzly. It is so much fun to tally up the votes! But to vote in real life, first you have to be registered! The nonpartisan website Vote.org has information on everything from registering to vote and state-by-state early voting options to locating your local polling place.
You know what else you can register for? The Early Math Symposium taking place online on October 29. I will be presenting again with my good friend, the brilliant educator Jonathan Dueck.
Your friend and fellow voter,
Stuart
Mathstart is a series of 63 storybooks organized into three levels for Pre-K through Grade 4. Each story teaches a different mathematical skill.
You can buy individual books, sets by level, or a complete library. Here is list of where to find MathStart books!
• Level 1, Pre-K/ Kindergarten:
A Pair of Socks (matching)
Oh no! The blue-and-red striped sock can't find its mate. It's not in the dirty laundry, or in the washing machine, or even in the clean clothes basket. But maybe with a little help from Pup the mystery can be solved.
Matching helps children recognize attributes that are the same, note those that are different, and provides an introduction to pattern recognition.
• Level 2, Kindergarten / Grade 1:
Probably Pistachio (probability)
Ever have one of those days? First, Jack wakes up late and trips over his dog Pirate. Then Dad makes tuna-fish sandwiches for lunch. Yuck. But Jack remembers that Emma's mom usually gives her pastrami—four out of five days last week. Maybe he can trade. What are the chances that she'll have pastrami today? And what's the probability that Jack's day will improve?
Learning to make astute predictions helps children analyze data to make informed decisions.
• Level 3, Grades 2 - 4:
Grizzly Gazette (Percentage)
It's election time at Camp Grizzly. Who will win the race to be the new mascot? Sophie's got the support of the all-important boat club. Daniel hands out flyers and candy bars. But with 50 out of 100 campers—50%—still undecided, Corey decides to throw her hat in the ring. As the race heats up, The Grizzly Gazette publishes polls showing how the percentages break down using a pie graph. Can Corey catch up?
Learning how to describe a group of 100 in terms of percentages is the first step toward understanding this important concept.
I See I Learn is a series of 16 stories that follow the adventures of the children in Miss Cathy’s class at Ready, Set Pre-K in See-and-Learn City (see map).
Each story focuses on a different social, emotional, health & safety and cognitive skill important for success in school and in life. For Pre-K / Kindergarten.

Camille’s Team (cooperation)
Camille loves to build sand forts at the beach. But it’s hard to build a big fort alone. See what happens when Camille and her friends make a plan, work together, and share the fun.
Learning how to work together to achieve a goal helps children develop mutual respect. Children see that they can get more done—and have more fun doing it!
Share the work. Share the fun!
